Project Information
Providing home repair to address substandard housing issues that are linked to poor health
Describe the need affecting community
Research supports that zip code is a better predictor of health than genetics and that substandard housing is directly linked to poor health. Over 58% of the children in the county live in low-income homes and 20% of the population in general lives in poverty.
How will this Advance project help to address the need?
Working in connection with health care providers and the Clay County Health Department, we will provide education, home repair, and other improvements that will decrease the factors that lead to poor health.
Describe the primary goal of the project
The primary goal of the project is to improve substandard housing in rural Appalachia with a focus on issues that are directly related to respiratory diseases.
Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project
Over a 5 year period, we would consider the program a success if we see a decrease in the number of residents who are diagnosed with respiratory disease when we have had the opportunity to provide home repairs and improvements that are connected to health issues.
