Providing ESL and bible study classes to newly-arrived Chinese families in the Oklahoma City area

Chinese students is one of the largest international student groups on the campus of the University of Oklahoma, that faces daily challenges upon their arrival in the United States. Language, culture, and the educational system are so very different than what they know. Adjusting to so much so quickly often proves to be overwhelming.

To date, we have introduced the Gospel to over 500 students, celebrated more than 60 baptisms and confessions of faith, and have worked with program alumni in starting new house churches among university students in mainland China. Recently, we have expanded our outreach to include the spouses and children of the students. We have designed ESL and Christian education classes for children. We are also working with a nearby United Methodist Church to integrate the children into their children’s ministry, such as VBS during the summer. For the women, we have started Chinese-language Bible studies for women. In this group are not only the spouses of the students (who are typically men), but also their mothers who accompany them to help care for the grandchildren.

The primary goal of the OU Wesley Chinese Fellowship is to make disciples of Jesus Christ through showing radical hospitality for international students at the University of Oklahoma.

Besides making more disciples for Christ, we would like to see a greater sense of unity, peace, and love among all students at the University of Oklahoma. A program such as ours has the potential of helping to build relationships between people of all countries. We would like to see indifference to human suffering turn into acts of love and outreach.
