Project Information

Providing pastors with leadership skills and practical vocational ministry skills.

Describe the need affecting community

We are looking to train leaders for the church and civil society through quality education and personal formation programs. Southern Africa, due to the fractured apartheid past, it has been set with poverty, social inequality, unemployment, corruption, educational crisis and lack of principled and accountable leaders of integrity. SMMS hopes to impact these issues through the leaders who are trained to work in churches with people across the broad spectrum of life in Southern Africa. We open our doors to people of various income backgrounds and teach them to live, work, and understand complex social situations in diverse multi-cultural environments. These people we hope in turn will impact our country through more than 4000 churches in our connexion which includes South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland.

How will this Advance project help to address the need?

We need to be able to teach people to think clearly and to engage in knowledge generation. SMMS is the only institution in South Africa which offers full time residential training of this quality where our students are encouraged not only to learn in a classroom, but also through doing life together.

Describe the primary goal of the project

Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary forms transforming leaders for church and nation by providing spiritual formation, academic, vocational and practical training required to develop skilled leaders of integrity, faithfulness and excellence. The academic faculty of the Seminary is passionately committed and qualified to develop the kind of transformational leaders the church and nation need. All are committed to teaching theology in an African context while retaining a sense of the international perspective local and global world views. With an emphasis on empowering people for the development of our emerging society. Our mission statement gives expression to our conviction that transformative leadership is vital if Southern Africa is to achieve its full potential and become a region that is fully healed, reconciled, able to address critical challenges, respect the dignity and basic human rights of all people, and deliver the essential and humanizing services that characterize societies at their best a vision of transformative leadership.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project

We would like to see Southern Africa become more reconciled, more educated, more equal and less corrupt. We believe if we send out competent leaders for the ministry of the gospel that we would be able to achieve that.
